It’s hard living in a rental house y’all. When you’ve owned homes since you were 19 years old, not being able to paint your walls is like not being allowed to wear pants. So here I am, pantless but still inspired.
The plan is to eventually buy again soon, but for now I’m looking for an inspirational place from which to let my creative juices flow freely. Right now, it’s happening here……don’t judge; this is the real deal, no mask mess of my office.
Yep. You know that night when you remember you’re about to have guests over and it looks like Hobby Lobby puked all over your dining room table? Well, this is what happens when you have to “get rid” of it quickly. 🙂
Being a prior elementary school teacher, all those boxes are filled to the brim with books and no bookshelves to put them on. Yikes…my teacher heart just can’t part with them!
My budget is pretty much nothing, so my goal is to complete this renovation with less than $200. Can it be done? I have no idea, but you’ll get to watch as I fall on my face.
And since I’ve been told over and over again that I’m not a great planner (wave your arms in the air you spontaneous free spirits out there!), I created this handy dandy pre-planning sheet to help myself through this project.

The room is about 9 1/2 ft x 11 1/2 ft.
My goal is to create a home office that is both inspiring and functional without spending a lot of money. The purpose of this room is to serve as my office and craft room, so it needs to have storage and it needs to be organized so I can be efficient. I want to feel inspired when I walk into this room, so it has to be bright, cheerful, and colorful.
My room challenges:
- I can’t paint
- I can’t hang wallpaper
- I can’t make large holes in the wall
- I can’t change flooring
- There is no closet
The room’s benefits are:
- Serves no other purpose than for a home office so I can utilize the entire room
- Has amazing natural light
- It’s like a command post (sorry, it’s the military in me). I can see the front door, the stairs, and the living room from my chair
- I already have a few furniture pieces I can use
The only furniture I need are a couple of bookshelves or cabinets to store things in.
Regardless of the results, I know I’m going to be so thankful to have this space to work in. Next, we’ll take a look at my needs, wants, and ideas as the rental office reno saga continues. Thanks for joining me! 🙂
