“The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.” Genesis 3:6 (NLT)
Nutrients of Trees
Since the beginning of time, trees have been a symbol of strength, shelter, and sustenance. Ask any woodworker and he’ll tell you all you want to know about the strength of different types of wood, their characteristics, and their features.
Although trees vary, they share at least one thing in common: They draw nutrients from their roots. In fact, these nutrients have a profound impact on what the wood will look like on the inside.
Take, for instance, this beautiful piece of wood. The dark streaks you see in the wood grain are the result of minerals being drawn into the wood from the soil. The colors and patterns that occur can be gorgeous.
Take a Lesson from a Tree
In the same way, you draw nutrients from the things around you – from where you’re planted.
If you surround yourself with negative people, the negativity will start to soak into the soil around you.
If you choose to make all your decisions with money as your top priority, you may find that money consumes you to the point of greed.
If you continue filling your calendar by never saying no to people’s requests, you may soon find that you have no more energy for the things that really matter in your life; like your family.
If you constantly expose yourself to music that caters to the world’s way of thinking, you may find that your outlook begins to morph.
If you continue to repeat unhealthy patterns because you refuse to learn from your mistakes, you may find that your circumstance never improves.
If you continue to eat unhealthy meals and sneak midnight snacks because you know you shouldn’t be up, you will continue to become what you’re eating.
Your characteristics and features become what you choose to surround yourself with.
When you choose to surround yourself with goodness, hope, passion, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, faithfulness, those characteristics will soak into your soul.
Its foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant, And in it was food for all The beasts of the field found shade under it, And the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches, And all living creatures fed themselves from it.” Daniel 4:12
We can’t be perfect, but we can learn to recognize the warning signs of unhealthy choices and situations. We can choose to learn how to think about the impact a decision will have on our life and the lives of those around us before we make it.
My hope is that you allow God to use your past, your unique characteristics, and your passions to mold you into the person He needs you to be. That means learning from your mistakes and choosing to root yourself in healthy soil.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:3
